Luc's Birthday Extravaganza

Luc's Birthday fell on Thanksgiving day this year. When he was a baby, I had originally wanted to spend this birthday in New York with my family and take him to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Probably best we didn't because having Aria as a baby, Luc not even being potty trained for year, though he does an awesome job with little to never any accidents now, and the ISIS terror threats. So maybe next time, when he's 8.
Instead, we stayed in Maryland. My cousin Kristen was in town, and Nathalie, Billy, and the kids came into town too. They flew in on Thanksgiving morning, and we surprised them at the gate at the airport. We then went to Bonne Maman and Bon Papa's house to spend the afternoon with them. We hoped over to my aunt and uncle's for dinner and dessert- Luc requested strawberry cake with vanilla confetti sprinkled icing. That's what he got...and almost no one ate any of it. Haha. It's ok though.
Birthday Kisses!

Friday, Luc's aunt, uncle, cousins and both sets of grandparents drove into Baltimore to get on the Polar Express. Aunt Nathalie bought cute matching pj's for all the kids. Luc was in awe of the whole thing. The train, the dancing, the hot coco (which he didn't really drink), seeing Santa, and just being there with his cousins and family. Afterward, Daddy took the kids to Bonne Maman's to hang out, while I went back with my parents to prep their house for the party on Saturday, shop for the rest of the food, and bake and decorate the cake.
All Aboard!

Miles! Miles, from Tomorrowland!

Luc's Birthday party was on the Saturday after Thanksgiving again. We held it at Grandma and Papa's house this year so we would have more room for people, and it was more centrally located for those we invited.
The theme was Disney Jr's Miles from Tomorrowland. Luc had lots of friends over: his cousins (Kendall, Logan, Taylor), Tristan (Teagan was sick), Kira (from school), Blake and Briley, Vasna and Danesh.
The kids played pinned the feather on Merck, colored and connected the numbered stars, and Vasna's dad brought over his balloon 'animal' kit to make the kids dogs, giraffes, swords, and flower balloons.

Luc is 4 Years Old!

Our Little Monkey is 4 Years old!

Weight: 30 lbs
Height: 37.3 inches
A little big for the seat now

This year went by so quickly. And Luc has grown up so much in this past year. He's definitely out of the toddler stage and into the preschooler stage (minus the tantrums).
I love this lil guy so much I could squeeze him! I don't write about all the bad things (he's no angel, like any 4 year old) because I want to remember only the happy, good, fun moments.
We are so proud of Luc.  He's our clown, comic relief, philosopher, and helper.
He's a great helper; with Aria (he will sometimes fed her when I walk away from the table, share his own food, hug her to get her to calm down, make funny faces in the car and tell her "It's ok, Aria. We'll be home soon." to make her stop crying), with Daddy (he loves to help Daddy wash the cars, change the oil, and rotate the tires by screwing the bolts back on and trying to lift the car up with the jack; vacuum the house, and water the plants), with Mommy (doing laundry, helping with Aria, and miscellaneous things- taking a strand of my hair out of my sink to throw away because "I tryin to make it not messy for you.")
Luc still keeps us entertained and in stitches with the creative things he says and funny ways of making faces, sounds, etc. He's still our little clown. I'm happy, so far, he knows when it's appropriate in school. His teacher noticed he does the eye roll, but she reassured us she knows it's him being silly and not disrespectful.
Luc continues to love the outdoors. All summer, after he finished his dinner, he would go out on his bike with Daddy and the neighbor, Vasna. If the hose comes out, he ends up soaked. If it's raining or too dark, he gets really sad that he can't go ride his bike that day. When we are stuck inside, Luc likes to dance with me holding Aria and me humming something random, chasing around the house with cars with Daddy, or pushing Aria's buttons.

Bedtime

Luc started asking Daddy to get me to come back to his room to say goodnight a second time after Daddy is finished reading the book. I go back into his room and Luc likes to give me hugs and kisses and we tell each other goodnight and sweet dreams, I love you. But this is also my favorite part of the day with him. When he's tired he's a lot more open and honest. I can ask him almost anything and get a real answer from him. This is where I found out who he plays with at school, I hear his problem solving solutions to different things, stories about random things, what makes him sad, why he acted a certain way earlier in the day, etc. Then he asks me to stay and sleep with him. I always tell him I have to shower and spend time with Daddy and that I'm not ready to sleep yet. He surprisingly doesn't protest or stay awake waiting for me. He cuddles into his blanket and will fall asleep quickly after one more kiss and "good night." Most nights, I wish I could climb into his bed and cuddle up and go to sleep too, right next to him.

When Luc wakes up, he says, "Ugh! I forgot to stretch. Why do I keep forgetting to stretch?" I don't know where he got this from. He asks that Aria be placed in his bed so that she can give him a "kiss" to wake him up. He's still in the best of moods when she's there to "wake him up."

Personality

Luc will often admit later that he was acting shy or scared. When he meets someone new and later we talk to him about how he wouldn't say hi or whatever, he says, I was being shy. We tell him it's okay and good to be a little cautious with new people.
During his school's Oktoberfest, they had a fire engine and ambulance there open to the kids to climb inside and look at the different tools and compartments. Even though I was holding Luc up to see, the firemen asked if he wanted to sit in the driver's seat of the engine. I thought it would be cool, but he said no. I offered to sit with him or go first, but he was still shy and said no.
There was also a bounce house obstacle course we thought he would like. When he first got on, and found out Frederic couldn't go in there with him, he got scared and didn't want to do it. I don't blame him though, it looked to be for older kids.
Later on, Luc admitted: "I was a scaredy cat earlier at that bounce obstacle thing." Again, I tried to tell him it's okay to not want to do something that seems scary.
In these situations, I see myself reflected in Luc. I was the same exact way he was when I was a kid (even now sometimes being shy with new people and scared to try new things). I know not to push him into anything he's cautious about. I also remember that when I was a kid, if someone had offered to go first or come along with me to try something out, I would've been more likely to do it. And I know when you don't do some things, you do later regret it. So if ever I can go along with him to help him open up and be more adventurous, I'm going to be right there. But if he really doesn't feel comfortable doing it, I'll walk away with him with no problem and no pressure.

Whenever Luc doesn't want to do something or gets in trouble and has to find an excuse, he resorts to "I'm just tired."

Sister Love

-Likes to pick out Aria's clip for the day and socks
Luc is always squeezing Aria a little too tightly.
-Will comb her hair in the morning or after her bath
-Is so excited to start sharing the bath with her ("as long as she doesn't touch my toys")
-Tries all day to get her to laugh at him, especially by making silly faces
-He tells me if she's fallen asleep, or not, in the car
-He lets us know if she's getting into something she's not supposed to

 Health

Luc's allergies have gotten worse and worse in the past year. On and off in the spring we started giving him allergy medicine because his eyes would water and his nose would itch. We put the allergen fan back in his room too. Over the summer, he developed a cough that we attributed to his allergies as well. It makes us sad though because whenever he gets too excited and laughs, he starts coughing. When he's upset and cries over whatever, he starts to cough and then most likely throws up. And all of this is worse if he's been outside all day, or if he goes outside at all at Grandma's house. We can't keep him indoors, but you can tell he's bothered by being outside.
During the late summer and this fall, he'll sometimes cough during the night as well and I know that prevents him from getting a good night's sleep. In September, Luc had a bad episode and had an asthma attack. We were given a nebulizer to use at home and he went on a two-week course of albuteral (as needed) and twice daily doses of steroids. After the two and half weeks, he was great! No more coughing when he laughed or cried. We didn't do any more treatments, and after awhile (still keeping up with daily allergy meds), the coughing came back. The doctor said it might be asthma and he might need long-term treatment. We did a trial of steroids once a day for 2 weeks again, and his coughing stopped. We will wait until the winter comes to see how he does in that season. We will evaluate with the doctors if he needs regular treatment if the coughing comes back again (which I have a feeling it will). I feel bad for him. I've had asthma on and off since I was a kid. Besides it being scary when you're having an attack, it's always in the back of your mind that something could trigger it at any moment. That just stinks. If he does have it, I really hope he quickly outgrows it. He's been such a champ though, sitting still for each treatment and not complaining.

School

He does exceptionally well at school and loves going to school. His teacher tells us he listens very well, behaves himself (she's never actually seen him mad or get upset- lucky her!), is attentive especially during story time, is reaching his milestones, and all the kids love him-during snack time when the assigned child gets to choose two helpers- Luc is most often picked by his classmates.
When I see him on a school day and ask what he had for snack, what activity they did, Luc answers: "Let's just not talk about it right now. I'll tell you in 120 minutes." ...he never does.
Luc is really starting to learn and understand Jesus, God, etc. now that he's in school. I'm so happy we put him in St. Paul's. It's a wonderful school and he Loves it! I was a little hesitant and worried how we would teach Luc about God since we don't go to the same churches (or church at all when he's this young). I used to read him the story of Christmas and Easter and mention God in conversation. When he was really little and I put him to bed, I would say the night prayer before laying him down. But it never seemed to stick or make sense to him. I took him to church once or twice, but at that age, he doesn't sit still and for sure didn't listen to what was going on. School has been such a blessing in this situation. They have Jesus time and learn about Bible stories.
Now, Luc comes home and asks questions about Heaven and God and tells me stories he's learned. On the way home from Grandma's one day, Aria was crying because she was hungry (starving, we later found out) and he started singing: God loves me, I love God. God, please help my sister not cry. She does not feel good. Make her feel better, God (to his own tune).
He tells me angels live in the forest too (besides Heaven) to play music for all the animals.
When he asked about my Grandma being in Heaven, he said: God wanted her to come live next door to Him? That must've been a really long drive to get there. She must've been so tired, she fell asleep! (How philosophical is that. And so true.)
He also told me that Heaven is in the sky and you can't drive there, so you'll need a rocket ship.
He's been enjoying reading the book about Easter (a little off season, but I go with it) and he had all sorts of questions the first time: "Why is he hanging on the wall?" Now he likes to tell me the story and explained it to Daddy the first time he was going to read it to Luc.

------------------

Things Luc Says:

"I not be kidding you!"
"Oh, Aria. I just love her so much."
"That's what big brothers are for."
"Ugh, this traffic."
"Why are we moving so slow?" (in regards to sitting in traffic)

What do you want to be when you grow up?
In September, he wanted to be a Pastor. He got the idea from one of the Jesus story time activities he did in school. When I asked him if he knew what a pastor did, he didn't know. But when I told him, he decided to think about whether or not he really wanted to do that.

Aria is Walking!

Get out the good shoes (and Band aids for the falls), Aria is now walking. No more one step, two steps. She's walking distances across the room. Luc loves to point out where she started and how far she went. And end with, "She's getting so big."
I love her drunk waddle, stopping in the middle to catch her balance, then tottling off again. She's so proud of herself and loves to make a game out of walking toward us just to hear us say, "Yay! Good job!"
Let the chasing games begin...

Trick or Treat

Halloween was lots of fun this year!

Earlier in the day, Luc helped Daddy and Mommy put up some Halloween decorations outside- spider webbing on the plants, ghosts in the tree, and the scary witch on the outside light.

We didn't get to hand out any candy to treaters since we wanted to be out early, and just left the bowl outside when we got home because we forgot to do it before we left. It was quickly emptied by the late-night teenagers.

Luc insisted that I dress up as a cat, and Daddy dressed up as a soccer player. As opposed to last year when we tried to mimic zinc on Luc's nose for his life guard costume, he was a lot more cooperative with the face painting this year and didn't touch any of it the whole night.

Luc trying to get Aria's blood.
We were out for about an hour and half walking on our street and the next set of townhouses across the main road. The weather was perfect and the mood was pleasant.

Luc was dressed as a vampire this year and we even got him to say: "I want to suck your blood. Hahaha!" People got a real kick out of that. With the first few houses, people would let him choose which candy he wanted from the bowl and then one adult told him to pick one for his sister. After that, with each house he would either wait for a second piece or grab more than one and say it's for my baby sister and put it in Aria's pumpkin bucket. After a few adults seemed annoyed with this, we told Luc to grab one for himself only. When he did get two pieces from someone, he kindly would put one piece in Aria's bowl.

Aria was a ballerina. The Princess idea didn't work this year. She wouldn't keep the crown headband on her head for one second. One dress I wanted her to wear was too small and the other was too big. Maybe next year.
She seemed very fascinated by the trick or treating. Toward the end of the night she was getting quite heavy so Daddy put her on his shoulders. She was up there babbling and OooOoo-ing as Luc collected candy.

When we got home, we looked through the loot, and Aria would try to eat the candy through the wrapper. When you took it away from her, she got very angry and cried. She was in a pleasant mood the whole evening until we got home and she was no longer distracted and remembered she was hungry and wanted to go to bed.

Aria at 10 Months

"Oh, when she’s angry, she is keen and shrewd! And though she be but little, she is fierce."

-Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night's Dream

Aria is fighting harder and harder to have her way or play with something Luc has or has taken away from her. Even her angry cry has changed and instead of a screech, she's brought it down a few octaves to make her point more on Luc's terms. One of the first traits that appears when you search for Capricorns is Determined. And how nicely that fits Aria. Determined she is to have it all her way.

New Words

Dadda
More ("Mwuah")
Ball ("baaw")
That ("tha")
She just started calling out for Luc, at the moment it sounds like either "Lu-Lu" or "Goo-Goo"

Sounds

Aria likes to imitate us saying "Oh, yea?"
And perfect in time for Halloween, she's started saying, "OooOOooOOoo"

Meal Time

Favorite Food: anything on your plate, pureed sweet potatoes, bread, cheese, rice puffs, cereals, green beans, mac n cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, spaghetti squash, spinach
Anything she doesn't like: if it's in a solid form- not much. She will even eat squished peas and has enjoyed fish sticks as well.
Aria shakes her head No when she doesn't want to eat what you're offering her.
She's now drinking water out of a sippy cup.
Even though we bought 9 month+ nipple level 4 to see if she'd drink more, since she dropped down to 4 oz again, she'll eat most of the 6 oz bottle, but not any more than that. She's either bored with drinking the bottle on my lap or she's just too excited about real food to be bothered with just drinking her calories now.

Games/Playtime

Aria clicks her tongue and looks to me to do the same and then Luc to start in as well.
Luc pretends to come after her and chase her and she starts laughing (sometimes she cries).
Aria leans her head in to Luc's to do a face snuggle.
Luc drags something along the floor and Aria chases it around.
Still banging on the toilet seats or toy box together.
While making a sound, they pat their hand over their open mouths.
If I make a bridge with my knees up laying on floor, she will crawl through.
She will give kisses to the toys.
Pulling the kitchen sink out of the play kitchen to drop things inside the cabinet.
She likes to put little toys inside containers or bigger toys (i.e. house; pumpkin bucket)
Pull a blanket or towel over her head, we say "Where's Aria?" and she pulls it down smiling while we say, "There she is!" over and over and over.
Takes her baths with Luc now. She was not scared to be in the big tub the first time, and loves playing in the water.
Claps her hands when she hears "Good Job!"

Favorite Toys

VTech Puppy
Luc's pink monster truck
Balls

*Aria is standing unassisted for a lot longer nowadays. She has even taken 2 steps by herself.

Apple, Pumpkin Picking

I feel like Baugher's Orchard in Westminster is getting a little stingy and full of themselves. They started charging $1/person (even little kids) to take the tractor to the orchard for picking fruits (maybe a 5 minute ride tops). And they will not let you walk there, so you have to take the ride. When I looked up to see about their pumpkin picking, they charge another $2/person to get to the pumpkin patch. And their prices are a lot more than going to the grocery store. Since it was just my parents and us going this past Saturday, I also wanted to find something a little closer. I had seen people on Facebook going to Larriland Farm in Woodbine and liking it, so I looked it up and decided we would try this farm this year. And their prices were the same, or cheaper, than the store. Score!

It only took us about 30 minutes from our house to get there. And this farm is Huge! You have to drive to get to different sections: apples, pumpkins, broccoli, kale, beets, turnips, etc, etc. We started with apple picking first so Grandpa could make his homemade applesauce. This week is was Fuji and Braeburn apples. There weren't a lot left on the trees to pick, but we managed to find a bunch and have a little snack as well. Luc and Aria loved the apples! I ended up just leaving the apple near Aria's mouth to suck on because the second I would put my hand down she would start kicking her legs for more.
Sibling snuggle kisses break

Yum yum!

After we paid for our apples, we drove back to the main entrance to get some lunch. It was freezing outside! The sun was hidden behind the clouds and the wind was brutal. Thank goodness we had to get back in the car to drive a mile down the road to get to the pumpkin patch. We blasted the heat and were able to defrost before going back out into the cold. This was the first time Luc had been to a pumpkin patch. Other years we would just pick up a pumpkin at the store. He had lots of fun riding in the wheel barrel. We all had a good time trekking around to find our own "perfect" pumpkin to take home. After picking a small pumpkin, Luc decided he liked the mini, baby pumpkin I had picked out for Aria instead. He's lucky she's too young to care this year.

He Works Hard for the Money

For well over a year now Luc was asking why we went to work every day. We explained to him that we had to go to work to earn coins. These coins we then used to pay to live in our house, buy food to eat, etc. and also to buy things we like and want- like toys. Frederic began bringing change home and giving it to Luc to collect in a jar. He would also use these coins to learn how to count.

When Luc started to realize there were rides and a carousel at the mall and that they cost money to go on, he decided that he'd need to bring his money with him so that he could ride them. So he did. When we told him we'd be going to the mall, he'd say, "I have to bring my coins for the carousel!" And he's been doing that for awhile now. Now his coins have dwindled down to just a few since Frederic started his new job and doesn't make any stops on the way home since his office is much closer.

Now that Luc is watching Nick Jr. instead of Disney Jr., he's seeing a lot of commercials advertising different toys and kid stuff. With every commercial now he says he wants whatever is on the TV. Whenever we go to a store Luc also thinks he can get a toy. I don't want to raise a spoiled kid or a child that thinks money is always readily available. So when he asked for the hundredth time to get the toy that was on TV I told him he would have to save up his own coins to buy it himself (or wait for his Birthday). I then told him we could make a list of chores he could do around the house to help Mommy and Daddy and by doing them he would earn coins each time. Well right then and there he asked to start making a list of things he could do to make money.
And there you go, an almost 4-year old's chore list was created:

-Set the table for Mommy and Daddy at dinner time (putting forks, knives, spoons at our spots)
-Make his bed
-Take his dinner plate to the counter when he's finished eating
-Help unload the dishwasher
-Help Mommy do laundry (putting clothes in washer and dryer, taking clothes out of dryer, matching socks, putting clothes away)
-Help Mommy bring grocery bags inside the house from the trunk of the car (if they're not too heavy)
-Water plants outside
-Dust when Daddy vacuums
-Empty trash cans in bathrooms
-Put books back on the shelf in his bedroom
-Clean the toilets
-Help Daddy wash the cars

I really think a 4 year old needs instant gratification, so instead of giving Luc some money once a week, he will earn a quarter for each chore he finishes. He will then place it in his Chores Jar on the counter. I've also made a chart with each chore to place on the refrigerator to help keep track.
