One and a Half!

Ah! Luc is a year and a half old! Where's my baby??

Weight: 20.8 lbs (though I'm not sure how accurate that is. Luc now gets to stand on the scale instead of using the one for infants. But he wasn't such a fan of the nurse and not being in my arms. It was hard for the screen to be still for a second so I think he weighs a little more than that)
Height: about 31 inches
Teeth: 12, canines are just about poking through

New Words: Elmo, Granma, Grandpa, Mama (will say it very pronounced now, even when I ask him to though sometimes he still likes to call me Dada and I have to remind him I'm Momma), No (while shaking his pointer finger), tweet tweet (or chip chip-the Belgian way), Ana/Nana (for Banana), peees (please) (More, please combination), Bubble, Stick, boot, bath, cup
Attempted words: apple, Thank you, Love you
Animal Sounds/Motion: bird, cow, horse, pig, dog, lion, elephant, bear, monster (same as bear), fish (pop sound with lips), rabbit (hand bounces up and down), penguin (arms flap)
Luc also says "weeuuweeuuu" for a fire truck.

Favorite Foods: breads, cheese, yogurt, fruits, Ketchup, Stacy's Pita Chips- Bruschetta, homemade pasta, mac n cheese, fries
Unfavorable Foods: vegetables, beef

Here's what Luc is doing now:

-Pulls back toy cars by himself to propel them forward

-Dips any food in any liquid, but especially loves Ketchup

-Loves to help-out by throwing things away, taking laundry out of the dryer, "making" our bed

-Pulls up and down his sleeves when he's washing his hands

-Tries to pull up his pants when being dressed, and tries to pull up our pants while dressing

-Loves sticks and birds

-Tries to sit himself into his car seat when it's on the floor

-Puts his pointer finger to his nose for something that's stinky and for saying 'shhhh'

Mischievous behavior:
-Can reach door knobs, knows how to unlock them, and knows they turn to open, but can't quite do it yet
-Plug in appliances into the outlet (his vaporizer was first try. No electrocution!)
-Turn on the floor fan
-Dispense water from the fridge
-Turn on the bath faucet and control its flow

-Part of making Luc aware of his bodily functions, we always point out when he farts or poops. When he farts, we say, "Did you just toot?" He thinks it's so funny sometimes he'll actually push out another fart right then (such a Boy!!!). He will also sometimes tell you he has a stinky diaper by putting his finger on his nose and saying "pew". When you ask him if he needs a dry diaper, he'll pat the front of his diaper and walk to the stairs to say yes (to go to his room). If not, he'll shake his head No.

-Luc will now grab my cell phone and hold it up to his face and flash his 'picture smile'. When I ask him if he wants me to take a picture of him, he shakes his head No and walks away.
Picture Smile!

-He can now walk up the steep (very steep, even I have to hold on sometimes) ramp to go up to the slide at the play ground. -As he begins to go down the slide, he'll roll over on his belly to go down. He has strong leg muscles now. -Must be from all the walking he loves to do. I've never known a toddler to enjoy walking as much as he does. He would rather walk than sit in the stroller/trike. And he can walk for quite some time-at least an hour or more, with hills.

-Luc also is imitating more and more. He saw me put soap in the dishwasher once, now it's his favorite thing to go in the cabinet, get the bottle of soap, open the dishwasher door and pretend to pour soap in the hole, then close the dishwasher door.

-Luc is starting to experiment with the stairs climbing like a big boy. He now wants to hold our hand and try to go up or down the stairs with his feet, no longer on his belly. Most of the time his legs are too short, but he doesn't care. We haven't had the gates on the stairways for a few months now, and Luc has been very good about not playing on them or going up without us with him.

-While it's great to see Luc being so observant, Frederic would like him not to be so much sometimes. Luc will see cigarette butts on the ground, point to them and say "Dada".

It's interesting to see the stages and phases that Luc goes through. For a few months getting into the carseat to go anywhere, especially leaving Grandma's, was a challenge. It was met with screams, cries, arching backs, running away, and bribing. Suddenly, one Monday afternoon, Luc actually grabbed his shoes and coat, brought them over to me (not Grandma) and pointed to his carseat saying 'vroom vroom.' I was instructed it was time to leave and go home. Now Luc likes to get into his carseat and go in the car. Soon though he will move up to a stationary carseat as his feet are hanging almost a foot off the end and his head is reaching the very top. Even if he's not 22 lbs yet (by law), I think it looks uncomfortable sitting in that short seat and think I might switch him anyways (one or two pounds under wouldn't make a difference, right?)

-On Fridays when Grandpa is working from home, Frederic comes in the house and gets Luc out of the carseat. Luc reaches for Grandpa to hold him and then automatically turns and waves goodbye to Dada.

-Luc used to resist waving hello or goodbye to most people when you asked him to. Now he'll wave at everyone and anything (sticks he's leaving on the ground as we walk on, birds that fly away, planes in the air). He's also starting to blow kisses goodbye to just about anyone as well- even strangers in the store.

M-I-C-K-E-Y
-Luc is beginning to watch shows on TV and they actually hold his attention for a few minutes. He likes to watch Little Einsteins at Grandma's and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. He's also starting to learn their movements in the show, for taking off (patting legs, then hands in the air) or the Hot Dog dance (lifting one leg up at a time). It's really cute to watch him imitate what he's seeing and participate.

-A few weeks ago we bought a bike seat for Luc for the back of Frederic's bike. And we bought a little helmet, which looks too cute on Luc. We've only gotten to take a few rides with him on the trails, but he loves it! When we get home and take him off the bike, he's immediately walking over to his seat and pointing to it and then pointing to go back outside. The trails have many hills and going downhill you can catch quite a lot of speed. Frederic, of course, has no fear on the bike and will take the hills as fast as he can (without anyone getting hurt). If we give Luc a heads up, he'll hold on to the side of his seat. As Frederic flies down, you can hear Luc saying "wweeeeeeeeee."

Since the last update, Luc no longer uses a bottle at all. But that also has turned out to mean he doesn't drink as much milk. He doesn't mind his different sippy cups, but he just doesn't want to drink a lot of milk anymore. Good thing he loves yogurt and cheese to supplement for the calcium. I also used to hate milk when I was young kid and ended up being lactose intolerant for years. I'm not pushing milk on him if he doesn't like it as long as he gets calcium elsewhere.

Luc is also "sleeping in". He can sleep in until 6am on his own some mornings. Other mornings, he's up between 5-5:45am but will lay back down and eventually fall back asleep when we come in the room. Then he can sleep for up to an hour more. I think the cutting out of the bottle and having milk with a dinner when we eat before he goes to bed has helped. Note to self for the next kid- don't wait as long before weaning off the bottle!

And just when we've established this routine, I have a sneaky feeling Luc's canine teeth will be poking through soon. I really hope they come in easy and don't disrupt his sleep.  I'm also hoping traveling doesn't mess him up too much either...

Luc will be an international traveler next week. We leave for Belgium for two weeks to visit family and friends. My anxiety is growing over keeping Luc content on the 8-hour flights and not getting other passengers upset. Hopefully, it'll go smoothly. I'm also hoping that because everything will be new to him (the airport, plane, a lot of people, etc.) that he'll be really happy to see new things instead of bored and cranky.

Next Challenge- no more pacifier. dun dun dunnn

Mother's Day

I had a wonderful Mother's Day this year. Frederic thought of a gift to get me, but since his back was hurting him, he didn't get time to shop for it. Saturday we went to the mall to buy it, realizing I would rather have something else, we went to Teavana where I got some yummy loose tea and a tumbler with a built in infuser. Awesome for work!
Frederic couldn't lift Luc for a few days, so I got up with him in the mornings this weekend. Luckily, Luc slept in til 6am both days. Woot!
Good Morning!

Again this year, we went to Reisterstown to have lunch with my parents, brother, aunts, uncles, cousin, and grandmother. Luc was very well behaved at the restaurant- whew! Afterward, we went to Frederic's parents house for dinner...and we forgot the dessert at home. grrr

Can I have the flower, Luc?

Luc, my little curious clown, has expanded my heart beyond measure. He has opened my eyes to the little things I once knew, but quickly forgot as an adult. He has taught me what true sacrifice means and showed me what unconditional love feels like in return. He has tested my patience. He has made me laugh the hardest in my life.
As my Mother has always been for me, I hope to never fail to be Luc's ears to listen, voice of reason, and heart of endless love.
Luc? Can I have a kiss?? It's Mother's Day!

Just Wanted You to Know

Dear Luc,

In case one day you're ever feeling like the world is against you and no one has your back or your best interests in mind, think of me. I do. I always have and always will.

Who else would sacrifice hours upon hours of sleep to help you sleep? Yes, as a newborn, it's completely necessary in order for you to survive that every 3-4 hours you were awaken to eat. However, at almost 16 months old, there are times when you still cannot sleep during the night. Right now, you're cutting your first bottom molar. This one is painful for you. The first top molars didn't bother you at all. Now you have a few nights when you wake at 2:30am and need Mommy to curl up with on the couch and fall back asleep (an hour later). And then who else would wake an hour before they need to to feed you milk in the morning before the sun is up? Or wake at 3am because you're growing and woke-up spontaneously starving?

When I would rather be relaxing on the couch watching mindless reality TV shows, instead I'm staying up to make you things to play with or sitting on the floor all evening playing and reading to you. When my feet are tired and my mind is exhausted, I still find energy (through love) to chase you around the kitchen table. Even though I'm on the verge of throwing up, I will Ring Around the Rosy with you over and over nonstop because it's your new favorite game. Maybe when I actually do throw up on you, you'll stop reaching for my hands and think of a new way to get dizzy and fall on the ground. -I joke.

When I'd rather see you laugh and smile, and babble on about whatever is in your little head while pointing your finger at me, I do not run away and leave you in the middle of a tantrum or distressing moment. I never think twice to pick you up when a sudden loud noise scares you, or Dada arrives home and you want to greet him at the door.

So many weekends when I could be getting my nails done, lounging around the house, go shopping alone, or doing whatever I think is enjoyable, we decide to take you to the playground or on a long walk for you to explore the nature around you. When it's freezing outside and you're getting cabin fever, I bundled you up to walk around the block to look at Christmas lights on the houses.

I do all of this now because I love you with all my heart. I'd rather be snuggled up in bed, or enjoying cooking, but I know you need and want me to be right next to you.

In the future, I'll continue to be your #1 fan as well.

When everyone is against you and telling you you're wrong, I'm on your side. If you really are wrong, I'll tell you as well, but I will stand by you as you figure it out for yourself. I'll tell you what I've learned throughout life, that sometimes what the majority says is not correct and your thoughts are. Or sometimes what you think is not the norm, but sometimes life can be easier to just go with the flow. If there is something you're truly passionate about, go for it. Don't let the majority stand in your way. The best inventions and progress made in the world throughout history were accomplished by those who chose to stand apart from the crowd and follow their gut and heart. I'll be there watching you.

And when you want my advice or a ear to listen, I'll come around again.

So when you're feeling alone and defeated, know I am there for you- whether I'm near or far.

Love,
Mom
